WELCOME TO TOMALES HIGH SCHOOL,
a California Distinguished School.
August 8, 2016
Dear THS Community,
I’d like to begin my fifth year as your principal by welcoming you back for the 2016-17 school year. I look forward to building on our successes from previous years, and to involving a whole new class of students and their families into our community. For me, this past summer has been an opportunity to explore California with my family, and I return for the fall with a rejuvenated sense of purpose for the work we do to educate our students.
In particular, I’d like to introduce two areas of focus for this year. The first will be to develop a coordinated effort to support a campus beautification movement, and I look forward to involving our staff, students, and the community in projects to update and innovate the THS campus and grounds. A second will be to continue to grow our project-based learning opportunities in all of our classrooms. A major focus of our WASC Action Plan from 2015, staff and students agree that a project-based approach is an effective strategy for engaging our students in relevant learning opportunities in line with our school’s vision statement. I look forward to discussing these areas of focus in greater detail throughout the school year.
The school year will begin on Tuesday, August 23th with a short assembly in the gymnasium at 8:10AM. We will collect the required forms at this time and is essential that you child returns to school with these forms completed. I look forward to setting a positive tone for the school year on that day.
Communication is key to our success. Please know that our weekly bulletin detailing school activities is posted every Monday morning to our website, with hard copies available in our office. If you provide your email address in the student information packet include with these forms, we will add you to our weekly email blast. In addition, we will be keeping a detailed school calendar available on our website. We will also continue to send our bi-quarterly bulletin, which we mail home with grades at the end of the grading period. Furthermore, we will continue to use the automated phone caller to make attendance calls, offer reminders about important events, and communicate any emergency information. Finally, please know that we are always available to support you with information if you contact our office, either by phone or email. We are here to help.
A high school is most successful when families and staff work together to support students in developing the tools that they need to be thoughtful, educated, and compassionate members of their community. In addition to offering a rigorous academic program and diverse opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities, Tomales High School will also hold high expectations for student behavior while on campus and at school events. Students will be expected to be on time and in class on a daily basis, and treat their peers and the staff with dignity and respect. In turn, the staff will work to support students in maintaining a positive and productive school climate.
I expect this to be a great year full of excitement and successes. Please know that my door is always open to you, and that I look forward to continuing as your partner in education at Tomales High School.
See you soon,
